Rodent Invaders in Virginia Homes and Business

Successfully combating a pest infestation is impossible if you don’t fully understand it, so the first step toward any rodent extermination and exclusion procedure is to first identify exactly what you’re up against. In Virginia, most rodent infestations can be traced back to one of two likely culprits: rats or mice.

Rats are common nocturnal invaders in many homes and businesses. In the state of Virginia, the most common rat invaders are the roof rat and its larger cousin the Norway rat. While the former can grow to over 7 inches in length and the latter up to 10, both species are notorious for gaining entry to properties by climbing through holes as small as a quarter in diameter. Worse, their constant gnawing means that any small hole they find can quickly be turned into a big one - allowing all sorts of other pests inside.

Mice are smaller than their rat relatives, but don’t think that makes them any less harmful. In fact, their small size can allow them to squeeze into dime-sized gaps and holes inaccessible even to their rat cousins. Once they’re inside, they are known to hide inside walls, appliances, and even furniture, contaminating virtually everything they come into contact with, spreading disease and triggering allergies and asthma in many people. The most common mouse invader in Virginia, the house mouse, is particularly notorious for ripping up insulation and electrical wiring, making mice infestations among the leading causes for house fires across the United States.

How RichPro Pest Management Fights Rodents

If rodents weren’t destructive enough on their own, their cautious nature can make them almost impossible to handle through DIY-treatments alone. Rats and mice are known to avoid unfamiliar objects, so even the best-laid traps may go untouched for days or even weeks after being set - during which time the infestation only grows as the rodents multiply.

With so much at stake and so many potential problems that can spring up, when it comes to rodent control, a comprehensive professional solution based on exclusion and prevention is the only real option. That’s where RichPro comes in.

All RichPro service technicians follow a tried-and-tested process for any home or business they treat. The process involves three core steps: Inspection, Exclusion, and Follow-up.

Step 1: Rodent Inspection

After confirming your appointment date, a RichPro technician will inspect your home thoroughly for any signs of rodent presence, including entry points, droppings, and any other identifying factors. Once the technician has determined that an infestation is present, he or she will provide a price for rodent control based on the severity of the problem and the size of the property to be treated.

While the inspection covers the entire property, potential emphasis is placed on common points of entry including garages, basements, crawl spaces, and dropdown or walk-up attic spaces.

Step 2: Rodent Control & Exclusion

With the threat identified and price set, initial treatment can begin. In many cases, this process can be completed on the same day as the property inspection and will always cover both the interior and exterior of the home or business.

Interior treatment consists of tamper-resistant baiting (no snap traps or glue boards) and lite exclusion practices. In addition to direct rodent damage, any larger issues we find (such as holes in the roof or siding) will also be shown to the customer with a recommendation for how they can fix the problem.

Following interior treatment, your RichPro service technician will then treat the exterior of the property as needed. This treatment will vary based on both the building or structure being treated and the severity of the infestation and can include the installation of rodent stations or other preventive measures for larger or commercial properties.

Step 3: Follow Up Treatment

Approximately two weeks after initial inspection and treatment, your service technician will make a return trip to the property to re-inspect it and determine next steps.

If the problem has been completely removed, focus shifts toward prevention; if not, your technician will repeat the program as necessary until the infestation is gone for good.
