What do pavement ants look like?

Pavement ants are small in size and dark brown or black in color. Their heads, bodies, and thorax are covered in grooved, parallel lines, and their thorax has a small pair of spines extending from its rear. Pavement ants are most often identified by where they are nesting. As their name indicates, pavement ants are often found nesting in the cracks and crevices found next to pavement and cement.

Are pavement ants dangerous?

Pavement ants have the potential to bite and sting people, but they rarely do either. They are mostly considered a nuisance pest. Pavement ants have the ability to live and nest within our homes, contaminating our food sources. While pavement ants aren’t a huge danger to people or property, they should not be allowed to live near or inside our homes.

Why do I have a pavement ant problem?

These ants are attracted to properties that offer food, water, and shelter. Pavement ants feed on a wide variety of foods. Gardens, open garbage cans, compost piles, and greasy grill areas can all initially attract pavement ants to your property. Once on your property, they have the potential to nest in cracks and crevices found near sidewalks, driveways, foundations, and concrete slabs.

While foraging for food sources, pavement ants often enter homes by accident. They find their way in through cracks and crevices in the your home's foundation and exterior walls. Other points of entry can be found around windows or doors, and around wires, cables or pipes that enter your home through its exterior.

How do I prevent pavement ants?

The following prevention tips may help keep pavement ants off your property, out of your home, and away from your family:

  • Make sure that all outdoor trashcans have tight-fitting lids.

  • Garden areas and compost piles should be located a distance away from the exterior of your home.

  • Ensure that gutters and downspouts are in proper working order to direct water away from the outside of your home.

  • Trim tree branches and overgrown shrubs and bushes away from the exterior of your home.

  • Seal all cracks and crevices in your home’s foundation and exterior walls.

  • Install door sweeps on all exterior doors.

  • Clean up crumbs and spills immediately.

  • Store food in the refrigerator or in containers with air-tight lids.

  • Wash dishes and remove trash from your home daily.
